(Performing Syringe Injections)

PREPARATION OF
THE MEDICATION

  1. Always begin medication preparation by washing your hands.

  2. Always mix with the 22g 1½" needles.

  3. For Subcutaneous injections, always inject with the 25, 27 or 29g ½" needle, for Intramuscular injections, always inject with the 25 or 27g 1½" needle.

  4. Begin by placing the prescribed number of vials of medication, with the appropriate needles and syringes, alcohol wipes, cotton balls, gauze and Band-Aids® on the counter.

  5. Tap the vial or ampoule gently to ensure that all the powder drops to the bottom.

  6. Remove the plastic caps of the vials covering the powder and diluent (liquid) by popping them off with your thumbs. When working with glass ampoules, cover the top with gauze, grasp firmly and snap off the neck of the ampoule by pushing your thumb away from you.

  7. Cleanse the tops of the vials with alcohol.

  8. Using a 3cc syringe and 22g 1½" needle, withdraw 1cc of diluent (liquid) from the vial or ampoule. You may discard the extra vials of diluent.

  9. Slowly dispense the diluent from the syringe into the first vial or ampoule of powder and mix gently. Do not shake. After mixing thoroughly, withdraw the solution back up into the syringe.

  10. Continue this process until all prescribed vials have been mixed.

  11. Carefully remove any air from the syringe by pointing the needle upwards and gently tapping the side of the syringe to make sure any air bubbles rise to the top. Then gently push the plunger until a small drop of liquid forms at the tip of the needle.

  12. Change the needle to a 25, 27 or 29g ½" needle for subcutaneous injections. For Intramuscular injections, change to a 25 or 27g 1½" needle.

  13. The medication is now ready to be administered. Follow the appropriate instructions for Subcutaneous or Intramuscular injections.
