In-vitro fertilization, also commonly known as IVF, is the treatment
of choice in cases of infertility when both fallopian tubes are
blocked. However, IVF may also be used for unexplained infertility,
endometriosis, cervical factor infertility, ovulation disorders,
or when a man has a low sperm count.

Basically, IVF involves taking mature eggs from the woman, fertilizing
them with sperm in a dish in a laboratory and then transferring
the resulting embryos back to the woman's uterus 3 to 5 days after
fertilization is confirmed. Approximately 25 percent to 35 percent
of women who try in vitro fertilization conceive -however, the likelihood
of success can vary from 0 percent to 70 percent depending on such
factors the women's age, the reason for the infertility, and the
experience of the IVF program.
IVF can be physically and emotionally draining, however stress and
anxiety can be reduced if you and your partner have a clear understanding
of the procedures. Your fertility doctor may recommend that you
and your partner learn as much as possible about the IVF process,
which includes the following steps:
Initial Steps
On your initial visit, you will consult with Dr. Cowart, who will
explain the IVF process and answer any questions you may have. Dr.
Cowart will determine which medication protocol is best for you,
based on your age and medical history.
You will then meet with our IVF coordinator, who will outline
your IVF cycle, obtain the proper consents for the procedure from
you and your partner, and schedule you for your preliminary screening
and tests. This will include a physical exam, Pap smear, blood work
for you and your partner, and a special ultrasound called a sonohysterogram
(or "saline sonogram") to evaluate your uterine cavity.
You and your partner will, also, be given instructions on how to
mix and administer the various medications that will be used during
your IVF cycle and you will be given a calendar of events outlining
when you need to return for cycle monitoring.
Before starting the IVF treatment cycle, a semen sample will be
collected from your partner for analysis. If donor semen is to be
used, you will need to select a donor (we conveniently offer assistance
with this procedure).
During the IVF cycle, a "mock transfer" will be done
to evaluate your uterus, using a catheter to measure it's size,
shape and direction. This procedure is done by either Dr. Cowart
or our Nurse Practitioner.
